Hanna's Guide to Selecting Bedroom Furniture for Your Perfect Sanctuary

Hi, friends! It's Hanna, Interior Designer/Decorater and Co-Founder of Birch & Bind & Hanna Mae Design Studio!

It's so great to be back with you and chatting design. And yep, you guessed it! Today's read is all about bedroom furniture. At B&B, we believe few spaces hold as much significance as the bedroom. That's because it's not just a room; It's a sanctuary, a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life (Maybe work, kids, pets... No judgement here!) Central to creating this special haven for yourself, or you and your partner, is the selection of your bedroom furniture. It might seem dramatic, but each piece plays such an important role... In not just the aesthetics, but also the functionality and ambiance of the space. It can be beautiful all day, but it also has to work for your everyday life! So, let's delve into this art and make your space exactly what you deserve!

1. Start with a Vision: This might be a little bit easier said than done for some. Of course I've visualized my dream bedroom since before I can remember, but not everyone loves design the way I do, and that is A-OK! That's why we're here to help. So just bear with me here....Before you start shopping beds, dresser, and nightstands online, taking screenshots on your phone, (and never going back to them, LOL), take a moment to envision your ideal bedroom. What feel are you going for? What do you like? What do you need? What will bridge the gap in that argument with your partner about your space? ...For me, it's less, but more intentional, throw pillows. I get my design statement, and my husband doesn't have to spend 10 minutes undressing our bed to get in it at night. Anything to not hear about it. Are you with me or what?!

All jokes aside, you want to fill your space with pieces that speak to you and your family. Are you drawn to minimalist, modern elegance or cozy vintage charm? Establish a clear vision for what you want. If you find this to be challenging, don't panic! Ask someone like us to help out. We offer design assistance with furniture selection and can help you narrow down your style and wants.

2. Assess Your Space: Okay, now let's think about what will actually work in your space. Understanding the dimensions and layout of your bedroom is essential for making furniture selections. You really don't want a ridiculously huge bed that blocks the doors, and you probably don't want to cover up windows if you don't have to. We'll take all the natural light we can get, especially here in Michigan! Record accurate measurements of the room, noting the location of doors, windows, and any architectural features. This will help you determine the scale of furniture that can comfortably fit without overwhelming the space. Less is sometimes more in smaller spaces! I would know... I've lived in a couple different apartments and rentals through college and beyond! But trust me, that doesn't mean you can't have the perfect, cozy retreat. Let's make it happen!

3. Prioritize Comfort: The bed tends to be number one priority in the realm of bedroom furniture, serving as the focal point and the ultimate comfort zone. I know it is for me. It's where you land after a long day and where you recharge for the next one. Definitely invest in a high-quality mattress that provides adequate support for your body and promotes restful sleep. When selecting a bed frame, consider both aesthetics and functionality. Upholstered headboards offer comfort and style, while storage beds maximize space in smaller rooms. I happen to have some favorites here at B&B that check all the boxes. Linking them below for you (and p.s., if you reach out with the word "Blog," we'll send you all the special discount codes for these bedroom faves, but more on that later!)

4. Harmonize with Your Style: Your bedroom furniture should feel just like "you"! Whether you lean towards sleek contemporary lines, timeless traditional motifs, or eclectic bohemian flair, choose pieces that resonate with your aesthetic. Opt for cohesive finishes, cozy neutrals, and muted colors for a serene, yet polished space.

5. Embrace Versatility for Function: In a space dedicated to relaxation, versatility is key in order to promote functionality. Look for multifunctional furniture pieces that serve dual purposes, such as nightstands with built-in storage or ottomans that double as seating and storage solutions. I'm extra high maintenance when it comes to my bedtime essentials- water, diffuser, chargers, ring dishes, essential oils, glasses, chapstick, and yes, more... Selecting the right nightstands (and dresser too, of course) maximizes functionality but also allows for easy adaptation to changing needs and preferences. From dressers with ample storage to bedside tables with integrated charging ports, prioritize practicality without compromising on design.

6. Pay Attention to Details: Ooohh! The most fun part (in my opinion). In the realm of interior design, it's often the little details that make the biggest impact. Pay attention to the finer details of your bedroom furniture, from the quality of craftsmanship to the intricacy of hardware and embellishments. From clean lines vs elegant curves to solid colors vs patterns, these subtle elements can elevate the overall feel of your space and bring your design to the next level. Plus, these fun selections make it perfectly "yours!"

7. Create a Cozy Ambiance: Lastly, don't underestimate the power of throw pillows! As you know if you've been reading since the beginning, my husband certainly does... LOL. Soft, plush bedding, layered with throw pillows and blankets makes all the difference in a space that feels like home! One of my favorite extra cozy details is ambient lighting, and for me, it has to be warmer lighting. Whether through bedside lamps or pendant fixtures, adding warm lighting brings comfort and ambiance to any space, while artwork and decor reflect your personality and passions.

Okay. I know, it can be a lot. But take a deep breath, ask for help when needed, and remember to enjoy this journey! You're creating a home that is a reflection of you and your loved ones, and if that isn't something to be excited about, I don't know what is! That's exactly why my mom and I started this business- To be able to share our love of design with you and yours so that you feel your best in your space and be your best in life.

Alright, enough with the sappy design talk. I hope these tips help. And if they don't or you just don't want to have to worry about having something else on your plate, we're more than happy to help with your bedroom space- Just message us "E-Design" and we'll help orchestrate from there.
