How often do you get new furniture for your bedroom?

The average adult gets less than seven hours of sleep a night. But they need between seven and nine.

Old bedroom furniture sets can contribute to poor sleep quality. Sagging mattresses or a worn-down bed frame should be replaced as soon as possible.

But what about the other pieces in your room? This guide walks you through when to replace each piece of furniture in your bedroom.

How Long Does Furniture Last?

The short answer is: it depends on the type of furniture and what it's made of. Plywood or particleboard will have a shorter lifespan than solid-wood pieces.

But you can expect to get at least 7-10 years out of larger pieces of furniture like bed frames, dressers, and desks. Keep in mind that how you use a piece matters, too.

When you use a dresser or wardrobe, you're likely only pulling the drawers in and out or opening the doors. When you use a desk or table, you're setting things on top of it that can scratch the surface. Your chair may hit its sides and cause wear, too.

That's why it's wise to invest in higher-quality pieces that can withstand everyday dings and dents.

Replacing Full Furniture Sets

If you're able, replace the entirety of your bedroom furniture sets. This allows you to maintain a sense of cohesion in your space as each new piece will match the others. It also means that you won't have to keep replacing pieces every few years.

If you can't buy all new bedroom furniture at once, start with the pieces that need upgrading the most. If the worn look of your beat-up dresser has been driving you crazy, replace that first. Or if you haven't gotten a good night's sleep in ages, inspect your mattress and bed frame.

When to Replace Your Bed Frame

You may not think about your bed frame as part of your bedroom set because it's out of sight and out of mind. But you'll want to evaluate it for signs of wear when you go to replace your furniture.

If you have a box spring mattress that's starting to creak or squeak, it may be time to upgrade. Try a wooden frame, which should last you at least seven years. Or, choose a metal frame that can support your mattress for even longer.

Keep in mind that a strong, sturdy bed frame in good condition will help your mattress last longer, too.

When to Replace Your Mattress

Speaking of your mattress, when should you replace it? Any physical signs like waking up with back pain or not being able to get comfortable are worth noting. Notice whether your mattress has started sagging or is lumpy in places.

Mattresses can last up to ten years. But it's a good idea to replace yours before you start feeling the effects of its wear and tear. Consider replacing your mattress every seven or eight years instead.

Memory foam and latex are durable options. They also collect less dirt, oil, and debris than spring mattresses.

Upgrading Side Tables

Most side tables are built to withstand daily use, lasting anywhere from eight to 10 years. So how do you know if it's time to replace yours?

Side tables and nightstands get a lot of daily use. You probably set your coffee or water on them. You may decorate them with knick-knacks or rest books on their surfaces.

This can lead to quite a few more scrapes and dents. Excessive signs of wear like scratches or scuffs mean it's time to look into new stands. Or, if you've replaced your other pieces and your nightstands no longer match, you may want to replace them with a more cohesive set.

Refreshing Your Pillows and Sheets

If you're asking when to get new furniture, don't forget about what covers them! When you get a new bed frame or mattress, take a look at your pillows and sheets, too.

When to Replace Your Pillows

The first sign that you need to refresh your pillow set is if they've lost their shape and fullness. If your head sinks into the material, the pillow isn't serving its purpose. Or, maybe all the stuffing moves around as you sleep.

You can expect a good pillow to last a few years, especially if you keep it covered. Clean it regularly and always use a pillowcase.

An easy way to tell if your pillow is too old is by testing its elasticity. Fold your pillow in half for a minute. Then, let it go and see how long it takes to regain its original shape.

If your pillow doesn't spring back to shape right away, you need to replace it. You may be frustrated because your pillow always loses firmness. Try a pillow filled with chunks of memory foam that you can add more stuffing to.

Replacing Sheets and Duvets

For sheets and duvets, look for discoloration that lingers after a wash or tearing. Pilling and fraying are signs you should toss your old covers, too.

On average, you should be washing your sheets and pillowcases every week. A well-made, high-quality comforter or duvet should last you a decade. Sheets and pillowcases, on the other hand, just a few years.

Make sure you have a rotation going for your sheets, pillowcases, and blankets. Alternate using one set for two to three months, then swap them out for your other set.

Upgrading Your Light Fixtures

Along with your decision to replace bedroom furniture, change your light fixtures, too. This easy upgrade will help your room feel like new at a low cost.

One easy way to know if your light fixture needs an upgrade is if you always think about it. If you sigh whenever you glance at your light fixture--whether it's out of date or just not your style--why not exchange it for something you love?

The right fixture can tie a room's theme together. If you've replaced your entire bedroom furniture set with modern pieces, don't let an old pendant keep the room from coming together.

Replacing Bedroom Furniture Sets

Knowing when to get new furniture can be tricky. But investing in a new mattress or bed frame can improve your quality of sleep. And having furniture that matches one style or theme will give your room a sense of completion.
