The Art of Choosing the Right Rug for Your Space

When it comes to creating a space you love, one element that can really bring a room together and add warmth, texture, and style is the perfect rug! However, with so many options available, we know selecting the perfect rug for your space can be such an overwhelming task without the right help! In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of choosing a rug that compliments your room's style, size, and function, helping you create a warm and inviting environment for yourself and your guests. 

1. What is the Purpose of the Room?: Before diving into rug patterns and colors, it's crucial to determine the primary function of the room. Is it a high-traffic area like a living room or hallway, or a cozy and private space like a bedroom? Is it a child's room or a playroom? If so, you will probably want a durable rug that will stand up to stains. The room's function will influence the type of rug material, durability, and maintenance requirements you should consider.

2. What is the Rug's Purpose?: Next, identify the purpose you want your rug to serve. Do you want it to be the focal point of the room, or simply add a touch of softness and warmth? Understanding the purpose will help you decide on the rug's size, shape, and placement within the space.

3. Consider the Room's Style: Every room and/or home has its own unique style, whether it's modern, traditional, bohemian, minimalist, or an eclectic mix! Your rug should flow with the existing décor and contribute to the overall vibe and aesthetic. Explore different rug styles, such as Persian, Moroccan, geometric, or abstract, to find the one that best complements your room's style. And of course whatever your style is, it should make you happy to look at! 

4. Determine the Right Size: Choosing the correct rug size is crucial for achieving a balanced and visually-appealing space. Measure the dimensions of the room and consider the furniture layout. If the purpose of the rug is to ground the space, a general rule of thumb is to leave an equal amount of space on all sides of the rug. In a living room, for instance, the rug should ideally be large enough to accommodate all the furniture, or at least have the front legs of the sofa and chairs resting on it. We typically say "The largest rug that will fit comfortably in the space" is the best option, while also keeping these other tips in mind. If you are looking for a small accent rug that will help to add texture & warmth or to define an open floor plan into its own sections, you will want to go smaller, while still considering scale of the furniture and accessories in that particular area.

5. Play with Patterns and Colors: Rugs are such a fun way to bring patterns and colors into your designs. We, of course, prefer more muted colors, however, you can incorporate whatever tones fit best with your specific vibe. Just be mindful of the existing color palette and patterns in the space! If the room already has bold patterns, you should generally opt for a solid-colored rug to maintain balance. Conversely, if your room is mostly neutral, you can experiment with vibrant patterns or bold colors to add some visual interest and make it fun! 7. Budget Considerations: All design tips aside, you'll have to consider what you're willing to spend on a new rug for your space. Rugs can vary significantly in price, depending on various factors such as size, material, and craftsmanship. Determine your budget and explore options within that range to ensure you find a rug that best meets your wants and needs.
